Our skin is our largest organ. It has a surface area of around 2 square metres and acts as a waterproof, insulating shield, guarding our bodies against extremes of temperature, damaging sunlight and harmful chemicals.
At Elan Medical Skin Clinics in London and Rayleigh, Essex, we are skin experts. Our medical director, Sue Ibrahim, is a nurse consultant in dermatology with more than 30 years’ experience, so she knows skin!
We would like to warn readers that many of the claims made by cosmetic companies are simply not supported by evidence. Even if they do contain active ingredients, most are unlikely to contain anywhere near the levels required to see results in your skin.
We would also like to offer a £20 gift voucher redeemable against our DermaActive Daily Essentials Package (RRP £230) that contains all of the products mentioned below plus an Elan tote bag. Please contact us for your voucher.
Sue’s top tips for healthy skin
1. Use a cleanser that maintains the correct acid balance in the skin.
Believe it or not products that claim to be pH neutral are not good for the skin! The correct acid balance of the skin should be around pH 4, which is slightly acidic. This pH helps the skin to act as a barrier against harmful bacteria, like the bacteria that causes acne spots. That is why the Elan Medical DermaActive Cleanser contains azelaic acid at just the right level – enough to maintain the correct pH of the skin without the skin feeling irritated.
2. Use an antioxidant serum in the morning.
Antioxidant serums help to protect the skin against free radicals in the environment, particularly from the harmful UV rays. Our DermaRecovery Serum contains Swiss apple stem cells, which have been shown to contain the highest levels of active vitamin C, one of the most powerful antioxidants around.
3. Use a sunscreen 365 days a year
The use of a daily broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30+ as been clinically proven to prevent skin cancer and premature ageing of the skin. Moisturisers that say they contain an SPF of less than 15 are simply a waste of time. These moisturisers will not protect you from UVA rays, which can penetrate through 4 inches of glass. Even on a cloudy day you need to protect your skin from UV radiation. Our fragrance free, oil free, preservative free, DermaProtect Day Cream is a daily moisturiser that contains a broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 30.
4. Use a night cream or serum to help stimulate cellular turnover
As we grow older the rate at which our skin turns over reduces dramatically, leaving our skin looking dull, unhealthy and lifeless. Retinol, which is an active form of vitamin A, helps to increase the turnover of our skin. Most over-the-counter products do not contain enough active retinol to do this properly. Prescription-only creams do, but they can cause skin irritation if used without medical guidance. Our DermaActive Resurfacing Serum contains high levels of retinol that are released gradually over a 12-hour period. This ensures that your skin receives a high enough dose that, released over time, should not cause visible flaking of the skin. You skin will undergo a natural exfoliation and will appear brighter within days of use.
So unless you have a medical skin problem, you only really need 4 products. What about a toner I hear you ask? You don’t need one if you are using the right cleanser on your skin. Toners are sold by cosmetic counter staff who need to boost their sales turnover.
